HELLENIC CULTURE CENTRE

www.hcc.edu.gr

After 21 years of teaching Greek as a foreign language, in Ikaria Island, Lesvos Island and Athens, we are now in a new place. Since 2014 the Hellenic Culture Centre has been organizing the International Greek Language and Culture School in Santorini, this beautiful island with its emotive and evocative atmosphere. Our school is based in Megalochori, a traditional village with bright Cycladic colours.

A vivid group of people coming from all over the world speak and express themselves in Greek, they sing, they dance and they participate in the cultural life of the island urged by a deep motive for knowledge, respect and love for the Greek language and culture. The spirit of Greek tradition and the restlessness of modern Greece will come to life with sounds and words expressing universal and timeless values as conceived by the Greek feeling.

LOCATION

Santorini doesn’t need any special references. It has been ranked as one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world, and its volcanic landscape takes your breath away.

Megalochori is located 7 km away from Fira, the capital of the island. It has kept its traditional colours and it is one of the few villages that have been declared “traditional settlements”. It is surrounded by vineyards and has many churches famous for their ornate bell towers, white Cycladic houses and narrow streets.

Megalochori is very closed to Pyrgos and Emporeio. All three villages are not very popular touristic sites, they are quiet and peaceful even in August and they offer many options for accommodation and food at lower prices.

You’ll find our school in the second entrance of Megalochori, right across the street from Geromanolis tavern.

This course can also be organised on any other dates in Santorini or Athens, Greece, for groups of at least 7 teachers.

Methodology / Didactics

Competence oriented approach

The course is based on the principles of participatory adult education, by embodying participants' experiences and fostering the exchange of their ideas, proposals and materials. Its focus is not merely on the didactic aspect of drama games and strategies but also on the participants' social and cultural knowledge gained through education and teaching to different target groups throughout Europe. During the course, the following techniques will be implemented: working in subgroups and pairs, role playing, guided conversation, brainstorming, drama and experiential activities.

Participants will also be given hand-outs, original materials, lists of drama strategies and websites for more drama teaching tools.

Blended learning modalities

Teachers will share ideas and experiences on using theatrical techniques and strategies in teaching and learning through a dedicated Facebook group or / and a Moodle platform.

Preparation

Before the course, participants will be asked to bring materials and describe the institution they work for, the basic characteristics of their learners, and their own professional background. It is also required to bring and present samples of the didactic material they use (books across the curriculum in digital format or hard copy) and other tasks they have to do with their learners. Participants will receive information for the course group (trainers, organisers and organising institution, other participants). Organisers will be responsible for sending all the necessary information regarding the venue and the trip.

Follow-up

Upon completion of the course, participants will be encouraged to form an online community on a platform, which will function as a meeting point. Within this network, they will be able to exchange didactic materials, information on teaching through drama today in Europe as well as recent publications on the topic .They will be able to exchange ideas for promoting the use of drama in teaching throughout different European countries. They will also be invited to participate in more KA1 or KA2 projects. The course also includes microteaching sessions by the participants. During these, participants will have the opportunity to assess the language games to be presented by applying the techniques of observation, interviewing and group discussion. Participants will also be given hand-outs, original materials, lists of language games and websites for teaching tools.

Quality Management

European dimension guaranteed

Participants of at least two nationalities should participate in this teacher training course, allowing the exchange of ideas and experiences from different educational contexts.

Validation

Assessments and evaluation methods

The HCC’s evaluation forms and practices as well as continuous support through emailing, educational platform and social media use ensures that learning outcomes are validated. After registration participants will receive a pre-course questionnaire which will let the trainers know participants’ teaching background. Before the beginning of the course a list of drama games and books will be suggested.

Participants will also be asked to present themselves and their institution, as well as their learners and their culture through local food and drinks. The presentation will be available on a Moodle platform or on a closed Facebook group. It will be used during the first meeting, but it will also be available online to the other participants so that they can have a preliminary knowledge of the group they are going to be part of.

Participants will receive information about Greece and Santorini in order to prepare themselves for a new cultural experience. The trainers will stay in contact through e-mail with participants and support them in implementing the didactic materials they have taken from the course. The HCC support teachers to use, adapt and assess a range of tools which have been created and piloted by its teachers, so that they can be used for students in different contexts.

At the end of each day an assessment using drama tools will be applied. At the end of the course there will be an evaluation method based on theatrical techniques as well.

Validation system provided

The achievement of the learning outcomes is largely related to the methodology implemented, which in our case is the outcome of wide research in the field of drama strategies in the classroom on a theoretical and practical level.

During the course, the following assessment and evaluation techniques are implemented: questionnaires, focus group, project work, and experiential/drama assessment activities.
