Where could you find a work position?

According to a circular by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religion, all language teachers of primary and secondary education are entitled to teach Greek as a Foreign/ Second Language. Those teachers, in case they are also specialized in teaching Greek as a foreign language, could work either in private language centres such as the Hellenic Culture Centre or in various Vocational Training Centres, in Second Chance Schools, in Adult Education Centres, in Universities' language classes, or in other language programmes organized by various organizations (Local Authorities, IDEKE, GSAE, OAED, etc).

Many NGOs have contributed in organizing language programmes mainly intended for immigrants and refugees , but a teacher could work there primarily as a volunteer.

All language teachers at the Hellenic Culture Centre are certified and experienced in teaching Greek as a second and as a foreign language to adults and adolescents. They also have experience in online teaching and they are native speakers of Greek.

Courses are held through the online educational platform Moodle and the educational platform GLOSSA, where all relevant learning materials are uploaded (texts, listening exercises, and activities for all language skills, photos, library, Forum, links to dictionaries, and to videos) as well as through synchronous Skype meetings, once or twice a week. During the synchronous meeting with the teacher, students practice speaking, the teacher explains, corrects, and organises their work. Throughout the week the students study on the platform: they can read and listen to texts, play educational language games, do grammar exercises, practice speaking by recording their voice through the platform, do their writings tasks, and send all to their teacher, who corrects within 48 hours at the latest.

No special knowledge on technology is required, however, a 15-min introductory session is offered for free, if needed, in order for the students to familiarize themselves with the use of the Moodle or the Glossa platforms and Skype. Students are required to have a good internet connection and a headset with a microphone.

Before registering students have to do a grading test, in order for the tutors to check students’ language level and educational needs. Ask us to guide you to the test suitable for you. You may also do the test orally, through Skype: the Director of the Centre will call you in order to define your language level and design your learning path, according to your learning objectives.

Preparing for the

Examinations of the State Certificate of Attainment in Greek

The Hellenic Culture Center undertakes the task- through the Internet (online platform and Skype) or through face to face courses in Athens and Santorini- to prepare the candidates for the Examination for the acquisition of the State Certificate of Attainment in all levels that have been defined by the Ministry of Education and the Centre for Greek Language.

What is the State Certificate of Attainment?

The Certificate of Attainment in Greek certifies the 6 levels of knowledge of the language. These levels correspond to the 6 levels proposed in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 and A1 for children aged 8 to 12). More information can be found here http://www.greek-language.gr/certification/. The examinations are conducted at examination centers recognized by the Centre for Greek Language (KEG), which belongs to the Ministry of Education of Greece.

At what level can I sit an exam?

You can do the exam for all levels, even for two different levels in the same year. The following exams exist:

- The Attainment of Greek Language

- The Attainment of Greek Language for Special Purposes

-Professional Competence for Candidates of Vocational Training Centers (KEK)

How do I know my level?

To make a freeassessment of your level of Greek and to set together your goals, please contact us. You will have an oral and written test and will help you plan your preparation.

When do the examinations take place?

The examinations take place in Greece and abroad on the same day, usually in May. Exams for special business purposes are also held every October and January.

When do I have to enroll to take an exam?

You must register and pay the examinations about 2 months before the exam. This year's entries are from February 1 to March 24, 2019

When are preparation courses held?

The hours and days of preparation course and / or homework are agreed on the basis of the personal schedule of family or business obligations of each student.

We offer lessons online from 07.00 to 24.00 every day, even on weekends, depending on the availability of our experienced teachers.

How does the lesson work?

After completing your enrollment and have sent your tuition fees for at least 10 lessons, we give you access to our online platform where we have all preparation materials. You study the materials and do the exercises. You send them to your teacher, who corrects within 48 hours as many exercises as you send.

Once a week you meet your teacher online via Skype for one hour. You can, if you like, increase the hours of preparation, but it is not necessary, if you do your homework, according to the timetable you have created with your teacher.

One teaching hour is 60 minutes.

Where are the preparation courses held?

The online courses take place through the e-learning platform developed by the Hellenic Culture Centre. Once a week for one hour you meet your teacher on Skype.

Face to face courses can be held either at home or at the student's office or hotel in Athens and in Santorini island. They also take place at the offices of the Hellenic Culture Center in Santorini throughout the year.

Are there any private lessons?

Courses are usually private / one-to-one and are based on the personal programme that is created for each individual candidate. The goals are shared with the student. It is rarer to have group courses held.

Which teaching materials are used?

Through a series of exercises in all language skills (writing, speaking, reading and listening, use of language) on the exam pattern, students are able to meet the exam requirements.

Special exercises and manuals, as well as the previous tests of the Greek Language Center are used.

Who teaches?

The seminars are taught by experienced philologists and specialized associates.

Responsible for the individual curriculum and the timetable of the courses of each student is Mrs. Ifigenia Georgiadou, who has been teaching Modern Greek since 1979. She has developed a methodology for preparation for exams, especially in writing.

Our students have a success rate of over 90% each year.

How long does it take to prepare for the exam?

To prepare for the exam, you need at least 3 months, provided you already havethe relevant level in Greek. However, it is best to start your preparation at the beginning of each academic year, every September / October.

What is the content of preparation?

The axes of the Preparation programme are as follows:

TEACHING MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY

The Centre''s faculty has produced original teaching materials for all our language programmes. These consist of texts, a collection of original visual materials (photos, videos, cassettes, CDs) and a collection of language games. Teaching materials are based on ideas formulated on teaching in the classroom and are being constantly improved according to their systematic application by our teachers. These materials are also used with large groups in consistence with the principles of individualized teaching. Theyincludealternativetextsandexercisesfor usein mixed-abilities classes and in multilingual-multinational classes.
The aim of our courses is to practice all language skills (oral and written speech production and comprehension). We particularly stress the use of language games and of communicative exercises through which grammar and structure can be effectively learnt.
